Brazil grossed more with coffee exports to the Arab market in the first five months of this year than in the same period of last year, according to data released this Tuesday (9th) by the Brazilian Coffee Exporters Council (Cecafé).

Revenues from shipments stood at US$ 85.1 million from January to May 2014 and at US$ 87.3 million in the same months this year. It was a 2.5% increase or US$ 2.2 million.

However, the increase occurred due to the higher prices under which the product was shipped to the Arabs, since the volume didn’t follow the revenues increase. The amount of coffee that Brazil sold to the Arab world dropped 11% in the same comparison.

Exports amounted to 655,500 bags of 60 kg exported from January to May 2014 and 581,700 bags in the last five months, that is, a decline of 73,800 bags. The Arab market, however, is still amounting to 4% to Brazil’s total coffee exports this year as it was in the first months of 2014.

In coffee exports to global markets, in general, there was an increase in revenues and shipments. The latter increased 1.9%, from 14.6 million bags from January to May 2014 to 14.9 million bags in the same months of this year.

Revenues earned went from US$ 2.3 billion to US$ 2.7 billion, a 15.5% increase. Exports’ higher growth in revenues than in volume means that the coffee was sold for higher prices than in the past, just as was the case with the Arab market.

From the total exported by Brazil from January to May, the majority was of green coffee. The processed product represented only a relatively small part with 1.4 million bags. The biggest importers in the period were United States, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Japan, United Kingdom, France, Turkey, Spain and Canada. As a bloc, the European Union was the biggest market.

Cecafé also released data concerning May alone and year-to-date. Last month, revenues increased 17.4% over May 2014 to US$ 460.8 million.

The volume exported dropped 7.7% to 2.7 million bags. In the 12 months from June 2014 to last month, revenues earned with international markets increased 34.1% to US$ 6.9 billion.

The amount sold abroad stood at 36.6 million bags, a 9.4% increase.
