QUEENSLAND, Australia – A coffee bar on Australia’s Gold Coast has signposted the future of gourmet coffee consumption, with a nod towards “coffee by drone”.

Portside Coffee, located on the beautiful Queensland coastal region north of Tweed Heads, came up with the idea after local customer and cinematographer Jagen Gillet offered to lend his drone for the light-hearted take on a new business strategy.

Although the bar does not actually deliver coffee in this way due to health and safety concerns, the management said support for the video had been huge since the bar posted it on YouTube.

Matthew Garrett, who works at the bar, said the post was just one example of how the crew liked to have fun with their patrons and keep thinking creatively about their engagement. “We just love doing great coffee,” he said.

“The owner Jerry and I were in the bar one day and one of our customers, Jagen, said ‘You know what, I’ve got a drone …’, and we thought ‘hang on a second, we could totally use that’.

“We would have been hung, drawn and quartered by any authority if we’d actually started delivering coffee in that way, but we 100% would love to do it.”

Garrett said the cheeky team at Portside “love having a laugh and a giggle”, and constantly try to make the place as accessible as possible for people passing through.

He said: “We have seen guys come through from truck stops that need a laugh but don’t even have enough money on them to get a coffee, so we try to be open to everybody and push the boundaries of what we do.”
