Within the collaborative framework of Vision 2020, Conservation International (CI) announced last week at the United Nations Climate Conference in Paris, the launch of the Sustainable Coffee Challenge – a call to action to make coffee the first sustainable agricultural product in the world.

With the involvement of industry, conservation and agricultural development partners, the Sustainable Coffee Challenge aims to strengthen demand for sustainably produced coffee and better account for progress made within the sector.

To do this, CI will align its efforts with Vision 2020and has therefore engaged with the 4C Association, IDH The Sustainable Trade Initiative, and the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA) through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

CI will also formalize its action plan over the next 100 days with the various partners of the Challenge, who include among many others the Starbucks Coffee Company, Fairtrade America, Humanist Institute for Co-operation with Developing Countries (HIVOS), Keurig Green Mountain, Inc., and the Committee on Sustainability Assessment (COSA).

The initial plan of action is set to be unveiled alongside the 4th World Coffee Conference next March in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

As Vision 2020 sets out to create collective impact for coffee farming communities, the Sustainable Coffee Challenge represents a significant development in this pursuit by aligning the sustainability efforts and activities of key stakeholders in the coffee sector.
