MILAN, Italy — Since a long time ago in the Balkans and Middle East countries, Turkish Coffee is not only a way of drinking coffee but a true cultural symbol, so much to deserve in 2013 the prestigious UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list.

The process of adapting such an emblematic coffee to a nowadays consumption method was not easy, since Turkish coffee owes most of its appeal to the peculiar bottom left by the boiling in a specific pot after a three minutes wait.

Gruppo Gimoka, one of the most important coffee roasters in Italy and the European leader in the filling and packaging of compatible capsules, decided to take up the challenge which was proposed to it by Atlantic Grupa, one of the major European food & beverage players and the leading South East European coffee producer with its Barcaffè brand.

The result is a Nescafé® Dolce Gusto® compatible capsule which, for the first time worldwide, combines the typical sensory experience of Turkish coffee with the convenience of a single-serve solution.

To fully comply with the requirements of such a deep-rooted tradition, Gruppo Gimoka has developed a capsule that features an oxygen-tight barrier, which is able to preserve the traditional values and the organoleptic properties of this historic drink, whose internal structure enhances its characteristics, thus ensuring complete compatibility in all the machine models currently on the market.

“We took up the challenge with great responsibility and commitment, and this was possible thanks to the path that Gruppo Gimoka has been following for some time now.  In fact, only thanks to industrial investments made in R&D and the know-how acquired in the last five years, it had been possible to define and fine-tuning the parameters to develops the capsule and to set up the qualitative standards to be guaranteed when producing.” says Massimo Faravelli, CEO of Gruppo Gimoka.

Gruppo Gimoka and Barcaffè worked closely together to analyse the distinctive specifications of this coffee as well as the brewing characteristics of capsules used in the Nescafé® Dolce Gusto® machines.

The contribution by Atlantic Grupa, which successfully distribute it in the Balkans with the Barcaffè brand, has been fundamental to deeply analyze the Turkish Coffee recipe and ensuring a faithful preparation of a tradition handed down over the centuries, the most distinctive coffee mixtures and the specific blending methods.

“Within the existing line of Barcaffé D.O.T. coffee capsules, we have decided to launch the Barcaffé capsule of Turkish coffee that is compatible with most of the coffee makers in the region. It is the first such capsule in Europe, which automatically makes it an exceptionally innovative product on the market because until now, in our region it hasn’t been possible to have a Turkish coffee from a capsule.  In a traditional segment such as Turkish coffee, it is not easy to be innovative, but essential is our readiness to answer challenges brought by the market dynamics, but also by modern ways of living. What is revolutionary in Barcaffe Capsules is the fact that takes only a few moments to make a real Turkish coffee with a distinctive flavour and aroma that fills the whole kitchen in the morning”, said Lejla Dautović Čaić, Marketing Director of Strategic Business Unit Coffee at Atlantic Grupa.
