Vietnam’s export sharply up in 2016 says MARD

HANOI, Vietnam – In 2016, Vietnam shipped 1,790,000 tons of coffee to foreign markets, 33.6 percent more than in the previous year, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, or MARD.

The main import countries were Germany and the United States, which received 15.2 and 13.1 percent, respectively.

Exports were valued at 3,360 million dollars, 25.6 percent more than 2015, official figures released today indicate.

According to data, last year coffee plantations increased by 0.3 percent compared to 2015, reaching 645,400 hectares. The harvest was 1,470,000 thousand tons.

The latter figure improved by 1 percent when compared to the same period last year, despite a 0.4 percent drop in productivity due to droughts in the region.

Vietnam is the second largest coffee exporter in the world, after Brazil.
