South Africa is pioneering Fairtrade SMME Programme. In a world first, the “Small Licensee Programme” launched by Fairtrade South Africa in collaboration with FLOCERT, the independent auditing body specialised in Fairtrade audits, will enable boutique coffee roasters to acquire Fairtrade certification.

Do you roast your own coffee? Sell the final (packaged) product? Have an annual turnover of under €2 million (+- R 27 million)? And purchase the Fairtrade coffee beans directly from a certified exporter / importer?

“Fairtrade delivers high-quality African beans that deliver a phenomenal in-cup taste experience, but also supports the ideals that everyone deserves a fair wage and the ability to support their families and communities,” says Danny Bryer, Sales, Marketing and Revenue Management Director, Protea Hotels. The hotel group switched to Fairtrade certified coffee in 2013.

Coffee is one of the fastest growing Fairtrade products in South Africa; the market is worth an estimated R50 million, or 176 tons of coffee annually.
