MILAN – Sustainable fabrics and resources are all the rage right now. Even Patagonia is betting on feces and dried beetles for its next apparel campaign.

So, when Sundried developed a 100 percent sustainable fabric from recycled coffee grounds (which sounds slightly more appealing than feces and dried beetles), we just had to check it out.

DVG De Vecchi

According to Shape, Sundried is looking to enter the athletic apparel market with its new line of natural, sustainable activewear, and coffee is the magic ingredient. Even better, the coffee acts as a natural odor blocker and anti-bacterial fabric, as well as a UV blocker. It also dries 200 times quicker than cotton.

In terms of the manufacturing process, used grounds are processed in a low temperature, high-pressure environment to make yarn, which is then woven into fabric. According to Shape, the manufacturing process is more eco-friendly than a majority of other clothing manufacturing.

Next up, the company is setting its sights on an activewear line made of recycled water bottles.

With more and more companies entering the sustainable apparel game, it’s important that anyone working in the apparel industry informs themselves of recycled fabrication options, since consumers might be asking for more eco-friendly options in the near future.
