Waitrose customers are waking up to a new type of coffee. The 918 Coffee Co has launched a range of Eco Roast Coffee blends in partnership with environmental charity the Eden Project, and are now available exclusively at Waitrose.

The new innovative assortment of Eco Roast Coffees are sustainably sourced from South & Central America, Africa and the Far East. In a world first, the coffee is roasted in Dorset using the unique coffee eco system that significantly lowers the carbon footprint of coffee production by using spent coffee grounds to fuel the eco roaster.

The unique process simply uses waste coffee grounds as the fuel in a special bio-burner minimising the impact on the environment.

Each of the five blends has a distinct taste from the area the coffee is grown. This is described on the pack with specific tasting notes for each coffee, from the sweet and nutty Central American blend to the vibrant and fruity flavour character of the East African coffee.

The coffee is individually hand-packaged in a biodegradable bag using fully compostable labels to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of making each bag.

Waitrose coffee buyer Polly Astbury, said: “We are always looking at ways Waitrose can work with producers to be more environmentally friendly. It’s fantastic that 918 Coffee Co have found a sustainable solution to produce coffee, ensuring that we minimise our impact on the environment and it is supported by the Eden Project.”

918 Coffee Co founder Chanel Cornelius says “Working with a retailer such as Waitrose is amazing and a fantastic way to involve their consumers in what we are trying to achieve.

“Eco roast technology offers substantial environmental benefits in the roasting, packaging and disposal parts of the coffee making process. By purchasing Eco Roast Coffee, the consumer can enjoy amazing coffee safe in the knowledge that the coffee has been produced in a sustainable way.”
