STOCKHOLM – SSP Sweden opened on Tuesday the first Starbucks store in the city of Stockholm at the capital’s Central Station. The coffee shop is located in the station’s North Hall. It is the sixth Starbucks outlet in Sweden.

SSP Sweden Managing Director Lars Edengréen said: “The coffee market continues to grow in Sweden, where Starbucks has many loyal followers. Stockholm Central Station is a natural next destination for coffee lovers looking to experience the Starbucks brand.”

Starbucks Director of Licensed Stores EMEA Arjan Oudejans added: “Opening up Starbucks in the heart of Stockholm with SSP ensures we can now share great coffee where our customers expect us to be – whether they are on their way to work, travelling or shopping downtown.

Starbucks has always been about making a connection with customers, and we take inspiration from the local culture to create a more meaningful experience for customers when they visit.”

To mark the opening, Starbucks partnered with local arts organisation Young Art and the photographer Johanna Åkerberg Kassel, to stage a special exhibition. Kassel’s work is said to pay tribute to the city, highlighting its close relationship with the natural world and the sea, as well as its vibrant culture. This work was unveiled at the VIP event, which also featured a tasting of Starbucks’ range of coffees.

Ahead of the opening, Starbucks organised a treasure hunt, which took place across the city.

Starbuck mugs were placed with statues of iconic figures across the city, (such as in the hands of the Evert Taube statue on Riddarholmen), and at selected locations inside the Central Station. The mugs contained tickets to the VIP event that could be redeemed by sharing the invitation with the hashtag #StarbucksStockholm on social media.

Kerstin Gillsbro, CEO of station operator Jernhusen, said: “We are very pleased and proud to announce that Starbucks is finally coming to Stockholm Central Station. Jernhusen wants to offer visitors and travellers excellent service with the highest quality, and Starbucks stands for both.

“Central Station is a natural place in Stockholm for the first Starbucks, one of the world’s most famous brands, when it comes to supplying their coffee and other services to many people. Every day we have approximately 250,000 visitors passing through the station, looking for many different types of service. Starbucks will be an excellent addition to our station’s range of choices.”

The new coffee shop offers a wide selection of products, including Fairtrade Certified espresso-based coffees, teas and several speciality drinks such as the Starbucks Frappuccino. The range also includes a variety of breakfast items, sandwiches, light snacks, cakes and pastries
