MATAGALPA, Nicaragua – Sajonia Estate Coffee, a leading Nicaraguan coffee exporter, announces the return of the Golden Attribute Competition for its second edition. This pioneering event celebrates the diversity, innovation, and excellence of Nicaraguan coffee through a fresh approach to sensory evaluation, one that is increasingly aligned with the evolving preferences of specialty roasters and coffee aficionados worldwide.
Launched in 2024, the Golden Attribute Competition breaks away from traditional scoring systems to focus instead on ten distinct sensory attributes: floral, fruity, caramel, chocolate, citrusy, funky, dairy, alcoholic, nuts, herbal, and spices.
This approach reflects a new wave in coffee appreciation, spotlighting the unique and often surprising flavor profiles developed across Nicaragua’s diverse coffee regions.
“Our goal is to showcase the depth of talent and innovation among producers in Nicaragua,” says Manfred Günkel Mairena, General Manager of Sajonia Estate Coffee. “The Golden Attribute Competition is a celebration of coffee as an evolving expression of both nature and the incredible craftsmanship of Nicaraguan producers who work year after year to raise the bar in quality, sustainability, and flavor.”
Held on April 14th at the Sajonia Mill in Matagalpa, the second edition of the Golden Attribute Competition gathered over 120 farms and producers from Nueva Segovia, Jinotega, and other top coffee-growing regions of Nicaragua.
A distinguished panel of experts evaluated each submission based solely on flavor attributes, resulting in a highly selective list of winners. These exceptional coffees reflect the innovation, dedication, and sustainable practices that define the best of Nicaraguan coffee production.
Nicaragua is a rising star in the global coffee scene, a fact that was clearly evident in this second edition of the Golden Attribute Competition. The showcased coffees not only reflect outstanding flavor profiles, but also the ongoing dedication of Nicaraguan farmers to continually improve their craft through responsible, forward-thinking production and processing.
Several of the winning coffees will be featured at the Specialty Coffee Expo (SCA) in Houston this month. Visitors can meet the Sajonia team and sample these exclusive lots at booth #505.
“Last year, roasters had the opportunity to sample and pre-order coffees that went on to become some of our top sellers,” adds Günkel. “This year, we’re excited to offer the same chance. Visit us at SCA or contact us directly to discover the best of this year’s harvest.”
