RIU Hotels & Resorts has taken another step towards the sustainable development of the company by introducing coffee that carries the Rainforest Alliance Certified seal in its 48 hotels in Europe, Africa and Asia.

This coffee is cultivated in a sustainable way in order to benefit the families that live on the farms, as well as the wildlife and the local environment.

This initiative was taken by the RIU Hotels purchasing department jointly with the supplier Emicela to support sustainable development in the tourism industry.

As a result, in just one year, guests at RIU hotels in Europe, Africa and Asia will consume a total of 120 tonnes of coffee sourced from farms certified by Rainforest Alliance that use sustainable practices.

These farms meet comprehensive standards of sustainable agriculture that protect the environment and promote the rights and well-being of workers, their families and communities.

The certified coffee is already available at the hotels in the Canary Islands, Cape Verde, Portugal, Andalusia, the Balearic Islands, Mauritius and Sri Lanka. In the future, RIU hopes to continue adopting this and other sustainable products at all its hotels around the world.

Rainforest Alliance is a non-governmental organisation that works to conserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable livelihoods by transforming land-use and business practises and consumer behaviour.

The Rainforest Alliance certification was designed to protect vulnerable ecosystems and communities worldwide.

To do so, it works with farmers, foresters and tourism operators, companies and consumers that are aware of the importance of conserving forested areas all over the planet.
