MILAN – The request from the National Coffee Association of U.S.A. (NCA) to get coffee exempted from tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump has been well received, the Association’s CEO Bill Murray said during an industry event in Brazil’s Sao Paulo state on Wednesday, reports Reuters.

Earlier this month, the U.S. announced on Wednesday tariffs of 46% on imports from Vietnam, the world’s second largest coffee producer, as well as a 32% duty on imports from Indonesia, the fourth largest grower. Central and South American coffee growers, such as Brazil and Colombia, got a 10% tariff.

Imports from these countries are all still subject to a 10% baseline tariff, even after the 90-day pause announcement.

“We think it is a good sign that our request has been well received and is being looked at, but it’s impossible to predict if that means anything,” Murray said via video call at an event held by Brazilian coffee roasters association ABIC in the city of Campinas.

Americans spend $100bn a year on coffee. the US is the world’s second-leading importer of coffee, with the majority coming from Brazil, Colombia, Vietnam, and Honduras, according to the US Department of Agriculture.
