NEW YORK, US – McDonald’s is now sourcing 100 percent Rainforest Alliance Certified espresso for its beverages sold across the United States and Canada.

“In the last six months, we have seen a number of very high profile product launches and commitments to Rainforest Alliance certification in US and Canadian coffee markets,” explains Alex Morgan, senior manager of sustainable value chains at the Rainforest Alliance. “It’s a sign that sustainable supply chains are beyond niche and not a fad.”

What does a commitment like this mean for farmers in Latin America, Africa and Asia? “The growing demand from mainstream channels will result in the significant growth of purchases from Rainforest Alliance Certified farms and ultimately in benefits for farmers and farming communities,” Morgan says.

Latte McCafe “From improved water filtration on coffee wet mills to clean drinking water for communities and better working conditions for farmers, these commitments will have widespread impacts across the coffee-growing world.”

McDonald’s investment in sustainability is not likely to end at certified espresso.

“The company is actively growing its commitment to certification and sustainability across its coffee portfolio,” Morgan explains.

Other fast food chains and major retail outlets are following suit. “In addition to the growth in coffee, other companies are actively engaging in converting tea, banana and cocoa supply chains to Rainforest Alliance Certified” Morgan says.
