BRAZIL/GERMANY — With several EU regulations on sustainable coffee coming into force recently, coffee producers need an update on the upcoming changes that will affect them and their practices. Cecafé, in cooperation with the German Coffee Association and the Global Coffee Platform Brazil, has launched an informative video training for Brazilian coffee producers.

A Portuguese-language video course now offers exciting information on the new requirements of European sustainability regulations, their relevance for Brazilian coffee producers and their relationship to Brazilian laws.

The course is available on the online platform Produtor Informador of the Brazilian Coffee Exporters Association Cecafé. Stakeholders in the Brazilian coffee sector can gain access to the course through a partner institution of the Produtor Informador-platform.

The video training results from the fruitful collaboration between Cecafé, the Global Coffee Platform Brazil as well as the German Coffee Association and four of its member companies, JDE Peet’s, Melitta, Nestlé, and ofi.

“The European Union is the destination for almost 50% of Brazil’s coffee exports, so it is important for producers, professionals in the coffee value chain, and students in the sector to enhance their knowledge of the new regulations, understanding their synergies with Brazilian socio-environmental legislation and best practices in sustainable coffee growing,” says Silvia Pizzol, Cecafé’s Director of Social Responsibility and Sustainability.

“For us at the Global Coffee Platform, this course complements the actions of the ‘Social Well-being’ initiative, related to raising awareness among chain actors and complying with social regulations, such as health and safety, human rights, and decent work in coffee growing. With the course, this knowledge about the new trade rules in important markets that buy coffee from Brazil can reach not only producers, cooperatives, and other entities linked to production but also sustainability teams and people involved in trade/exports, spreading the message to all links in the chain,” emphasizes Vinícius Figueiredo from the Global Coffee Platform Brazil.

“Brazil is the most important and largest origin for the German coffee market. The new socio-environmental legislation transforms the coffee sector and highlights that dialogue within the value chain is essential to make sustainability thrive. We are grateful for the cooperation with Cecafé and the Global Coffee Platform Brazil in raising awareness of the new legislation,” underscores Charlotte Heyl, Director of Sustainability at the German Coffee Association.
