Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Supply declared state of phytosanitary emergency in the states of São Paulo and Espírito Santo due to the pest infestation of Coffee Borer Beetle (Hypothenemus hampei). The ordinance was published on this Monday’s Union Official Gazette.

The insect attacks coffee grains in any of its stages, destructing the interior of the fruit and putting production at risk. The ordinances also extend pest management and emergency measures of crop protection.

According to the ministry, these measures are due to the serious situation, including the pest’s short cycle and capacity of proliferation, and lack of efficient management alternatives. The measures is seeking to reduce productivity losses and keep coffee quality.
