Arvid Nordquist Coffee Roastery decarbonises their marine shipping by introducing 100% ISCC-certified liquid biogas

STOCKHOLM, Sweden – Arvid Nordquist Coffee Roastery has long been committed to environmental and social sustainability. The Swedish roaster’s sustainability strategy is linked to the UN’s global sustainability goals, Agenda 2030, and it considers the entire value chain of coffee industry. Since 2011, Arvid Nordquist Coffee Roastery has continuously decarbonised its business.

From January 2025, the company will take another step on its journey towards a more sustainable business: in collaboration with Scanlog, Arvid Nordquist introduces 100% liquid biogas (LBG) for its maritime transport. A measure promising a 100% reduction in carbon emissions associated with the roaster’s marine shipping.

As a result of the agreement with Scanlog, Arvid Nordquist will be able to source 100% LBG produced according to the mass balance principle and third-party certified by ISCC.

Scanlog’s uniquely offer LBG produced from European manure providing an industry-best in terms carbon reduction versus conventional fuel. Also, it is produced according to the guidelines set by the Smart Freight Centre (SFC) allowing Scanlog and Arvid Nordquist to take full responsibility for their carbon emissions.

The sustainability strategy

Since 2011, Arvid Nordquist Coffee Roastery has prepared a greenhouse gas inventory with an aim to decarbonise its business where possible. The introduction of 100% liquid biogas for its maritime transport – in collaboration with Scanlog – helps the company achieve a major milestone.

Other decarbonising initiatives from Arvid Nordquist include:

  • Since 2014, the company has exclusively sourced sustainable certified green beans; either Rainforest Alliance or Fairtrade and EU Organic.
  • The production is powered 100% by wind and hydropower, and the coffee is roasted on 100% biogas.
  • In 2025, Arvid Nordquist’s will move into its new roastery built from timber, powered by renewables, and set up to minimise energy consumption.
  • The coffee is offered in a 100% renewable bioplastic; it is ISCC certified and offers a 50% reduction in emissions compared to conventional plastic.
