A vision for quality and impact

“With every cup, we learn, we grow, and we brew a better future together.” – Students of the 17g Coffee Project

17g Coffee reinvests its profits into initiatives that improve the livelihoods of coffee farmers, focusing on empowering women. By providing training, equipment, and infrastructure for alternative processing methods, the project helps farmers enhance coffee quality while increasing sustainability.

Ongoing support for NGUVU

17g Coffee actively collaborates with six female farmers in Meru County, Kenya, funding key improvements like fermentation training, drying beds, and advanced infrastructure such as concrete patios and polytunnels for controlled drying. This year’s efforts focus on refining micro-lot processing with greater precision due to the polytunnels.

The agronomist Doris Kajuju

Leading this work is Doris Kajuju, an agronomist based in Timau, Meru County, who supports local farmers with training in sustainable practices and crop care. Through her guidance, over 200 female farmers in the region benefit from fair, upfront payments — a step toward greater equity in Kenya’s coffee sector.

An educational journey through coffee

As a unique blend of education and business, 17g Coffee offers students at Collège Alpin Beau Soleil an immersive learning experience. By engaging in all stages of the coffee business—from sourcing to roasting, branding, and marketing—students gain insights into global trade, ethics sustainability and the challenges of running a company.

The goal here is to provide contextual learning where students can apply class room based learning to real-world challenges, making 17g Coffee a standout example of education in action.

About 17g Coffee

Founded in February 2021, 17g Coffee originated as an educational project at Collège Alpin Beau Soleil in Villars-sur-Ollon, Switzerland. The initiative began with just 17 students and staff, with its name reflecting its unique origins: 17 grams of coffee, the foundation of their first recipe; 17 founding members; and the 17-year-old students who helped establish the company. Since its inception, over 111 students and staff have been trained as certified baristas, many of whom have earned additional qualifications in coffee roasting and brewing through programs by the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA).

17g Coffee operates as a not-for-profit organization, reinvesting profits into projects that enhance the quality of life for coffee farmers and their families. The company’s flagship initiative focuses on supporting female farmers in Kenya through education and empowerment programmes. This work is conducted in partnership with organizations such as Falcon Specialty, Algrano, and Nguvu, a Danish company dedicated to empowering female coffee farmers.
